The Differences of Nonverbal Communication in Cross-culture Communication between the Chinese and the Americans



Abstract: The rapid development of the global economy and communication technology makes communication easier among countries. In various communicative activities, people convey information through verbal and nonverbal ways. In order to keep cross-cultural communication preceding smoothly, it is very necessary for us to understand non-verbal communication between different countries. This thesis mainly discusses the nonverbal differences between the Chinese and the Americans, and then focuses on the Sino-American differences of body languages, gestures, eye contact, and facial expressions to arouse people’s awareness of the importance of non-verbal communication. Finally, it makes some proposals to reduce the problems with Sino-American nonverbal communication, and to improve the efficiency of the communication between the people of both sides.
