My View on Online Chatting
There is a heated debate today over the issue of whether online chatting is supposed to be encouraged. With the development of Internet and other high-technologies, the popularization of online chatting is almost unstoppable. However, one person’s meat is another’s poison. Views vary from person to person, both supported by sound reasons.
As for the positive factor, it is out of question that online chatting, which can be an extremely useful method of communication, is indispensable to us. Making and keeping friends by online chatting is a good case in point. Furthermore, compared with letters or any other traditional ways, online chatting contains more data than ever. There are also video and audio chatting online, through which people’s chatting can be of higher quality and efficiency. In the society of increasingly fierce competition, it is impossible to overemphasize the importance of the factors mentioned above.
But those who criticize it argue that demerits overweigh merits on this issue for the following reasons. For the one thing, online chatting makes people more distant instead of closer in daily communication. Visiting and talking to others face-to-face are definitely the best ways to deal with your social relations, whereas online chatting can never equate
with the direct ways in this aspect since there are so many limitations when being compared. For the other thing, it’s no exaggeration to say that virtual world is far away from our world. It can even pose a great threat to the cyber citizen especially teenagers, since there are so many liars and other negative factors, according to some experts from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
From what has been discussed above and some relevant factors taken into consideration, I’d like to set forth a compromise proposal. There will never be any problem in online chatting itself, but the way people treat it. As far as I’m concern, both views are one-sided which cannot bear closer analysis. What we’re supposed to do is to let merits outshine demerits, in other word, to take the essence and discard the dregs.
