Tess’struggle for her life The brief description of Tess
Tess is a country girl, but she is a born beauty. She is kind-hearted, brave and charming. She struggles for her life, but fail. She hopes live with her angle, but the society destroyed it.
2.2 The relationship with Alec and Angel
Alec is her “cousin”, he cheat her, rape her, and make her in trouble. Tess hates him, but had to live with him because of the cruel society, to be his mistress. She fells love with Angel, and Angel is her angel, he brings happiness to her. Angel is her husband but still discards her. Finally, Tess kills Alec for her true love and has a-seven-day with her lover. And then she is dead. The miserable life of Tess
Tess’s miserable life begins to when her father knows his family’s ancestor is a nobleman. So she goes to her “cousin’s” home. Her “cousin” Alec makes use of her innocent and naïve cheat and rapes her. So her life becomes in trouble. She gives birth a child but dead for illness. Tess hates him, but finally had to be his mistress. Her second adversity comes with her confess to her husband. She regards his husband as her angel. “She loves he extremely, she looks he as god.” (Thomas Hardy, 261). After the wedding, Tess and Angel confess their pasts to
each other. Tess forgives Angel for his past error, but Angel cannot forgive Tess’ past. So he leaves Tess for Brazil. He is a sensitive and hesitated man, as the author write, “What alters when it alteration finds.”(Shakespeare, Sonnet, 116th poem, line 3) And finally, she kills Alec and lives a-seven-day with her lover and later arrested and dead.
3. The reason why Tess lives a miserable life
Tess’s miserable life reflects a society’s miserable life. In that time, she wants to live a happy with her lover, but the society destroyed it.,” outside was the inexorable” (Thomas Hardy, 351). Now she is not naïve, not innocent. “Almost at a leap Tess thus changed from simple girl to complex woman.”(Thomas Hardy, 145). At the end of the novel, when she kills the man she hatred, it means her another miserable comes, that is dead. In actually, her tragedy is caused by the times she lives and her natural weakness. She has no power to defense herself. Just because of her contradictory and tragic character, Tess has such miserable fate.
Conclusion
It is true that we should respect Tess because she endures a great deal of pain. Through this passage, we can see from her father know that his family’s ancestor is peer, her miserable life is begin. Maybe Tess will live a happy life if doesn’t have such events. But it is impossible. Alec is so cruel too her, so Angel does. Alec is the direct reason for her death, but Angel is crueler. He gives her hope, but also put her to the hell. But she still loves him. ” Angel- I am almost glad- yes, glad! This happiness could not have lasted-it was too much-I have had enough; and now I shall not live for you to despise me.(Thomas Hardy, 357). She feels happy when she lives with Angel, although the time is too short. In fact, the cruelest person is the society. She lost her purity, and lost her fate. Because live in that time, the society cannot accept a girl who lost her pure. Her Angel also does wrong things, but he has not been blamed for it. So, at last, the society ruins the good thing and “ended his sport with Tess”. (Thomas Hardy, 359).
