American Education

Education is "like a big window opening", according to the English novelist Mary Webb (Zhu Yongtao Page No.383). The American educational development is the process of ceaseless self-development and innovation process, is the forming process of diversification and a wide range of social participation process. In American, everyone should have the opportunity to receive the best education, and to develop the individual talents and abilities. Whatever they are poor or rich.

In America, all children can get free public education for 12 years. From the early nineteenth century, the compulsory education have continued to be supported by more and more people. And if the students' performances are very good, they also can get financial help to continue their studies for more years. In most areas, the public school education begins with kinder-garten classes since 5 years old, and there are about 3 million American children go to kinder-garten every year. For these children, kinder-garten is their first school experience, when they are getting younger, they can attend nursery schools, which accept children from 3 to 5 years old for half-day sessions ranging from 2 days to 5 days a week, or day care centers, which provide working- mother whose children are too young to go to school, and they need a place to leave their children all day 5 days a week. In this country, there are 12 grades, generally speaking, one academic year is from September through June, and it needs to complete each grade. When children are about 6 years old, they begin their first grade. The first academic institution that a child attends is called grammar school or elementary school(Zhu Yongtao Page No.386), and the students in the typical elementary school are grouped into classes, what's more, each group stays together for all school day and all school year. In addition, one teacher may teach one class for most subjects. In most high schools, students may meet with a different teacher and different students for each subject. The school day starts at 9:00 AM, and ends about 3:30 PM. Junior high and high school students usually attend classes from 8:30 AM, until 3:30 PM. However for all these, the students all go to school from Monday to Friday. Grammar schools teach reading, arithmetic ,language arts and so on.


After a student graduates from high school and his school record and test scores are good, he can go to college. There are 3000 institutions in America. Since World War Ⅱ, America has become the biggest country in the world, then he began to pay attention to the education, and the number of students has increased enormously, and higher education developed dramatically. In 1939, there are 1.5 million people in the nation's colleges and universities. By 1970, it had increased to 8.5 million, and in the following years, colleges and universities had expanded greatly, as well as many university branches were established ,many new schools had been built. This huge expansion reflects the nation's population explosion as well as a trend toward democratizing higher education((Zhu Yongtao Page No.388). In college, an academic year is about 9 months, it usually from mid-September until early June or from late August until May. American universities offer three main degrees, a master's degree, a bachelor's degree and A Ph.D degree. The master's degree can be earned by one or two academic years beyond the bachelor's degree. A Ph.D degree usually takes at least three years beyond the master's. After completing four academic years with acceptable grades, the students can get a bachelor's degree, by the way, we can divide the college grades into five levels, that is from A to F, and F is a failing grade.

A college community is an interesting and living place, they can be involved in religious, social, athletic and so on, at many schools campus life revolves around fraternities and sororities, and athletics is also an important part of life every year. It is worth momenting that all age students can receive more than $300 million in monetary assistance, and many students use summer holidays to work to help finance their education.

American high-level education determines American leading position in science and technology in the world. And a wide range of social participation is the most important force to promote the United States education .
