My Australian Adventure
A couple of years ago I went to Perth, the capital city of the state of Western Australia, with my good friend Chris. From there, we planned to drive across that huge country to Melbourne, the capital city of the state of Victoria on the east coast of Australia. The drive was almost 3,500 km and was at least 35 hours of driving. We hoped that it would take us no more than five days, with stops. Much of the journey was across the Nullarbor Plain, a flat, almost treeless, dry area. It is believed to be an ancient dry seabed.
The first day was great fun. We were excited and laughing at each other’s jokes. By the second day, we were bored. There is a stretch of about 146.6 km that holds the world record for the longest dead straight road. Suddenly, in the distance, Chris spotted some kangaroos. We decided to get a closer look. Chris drove faster to catch up with the kangaroos. As we soon realized, this was very dangerous. Suddenly a kangaroo jumped out in front of us. We heard a loud BANG! Chris stopped the car and we got out. Behind the car was a large kangaroo lying completely still on the ground. Chris went over to the kangaroo. It was very quiet, but seemed unharmed. I suggested that we should call the police to move the animal safely. “Wait a moment,” Chris said and, with this, put his baseball cap on its head. He took off his sunglasses and put them on the kangaroo and did the same with his jacket. Then, he put his arm around the kangaroo and asked me to take a photo of them together. While I was focusing the camera, I saw the kangaroo move. It suddenly jumped up, looked at Chris, and hopped away into the distance before we could do anything.
I started laughing but Chris looked very serious. He said his wallet and passport were in the jacket. I started laughing even harder. I suddenly stopped laughing, however, when he said that our car keys were also in there!
