An Analysis of Paul’s Love Tragedy in Sons and Lovers (对《儿子与情人》中保罗的爱情悲剧的分析)

一、论题的目的和意义

I am very interested in the author’s writing themes. And Paul’s love tragedy have many reasons, conclude history reasons, social reasons, class differentials and so on. Sons and lovers show us a special affection---- the Oedipus Complex. Its emergence has profound social and economic roots. D.H.Lawrence made a big breakthrough in creating tradition, and developing new elements. He focused on the inner world of people, starting from the spiritual stratum, describing closely the complicated affection between male and female. Meanwhile, the background at that time also affected the developments of the novel. In the capitalist industrialization, people were physically and mentally suppressed, they had no healthy spirit, which led to the development of distorted affection. This novel is the evidence of the Oedipus complex and we can find the evidences and the facts from Lawrence’s life and the book.



二、研究的理论基础

According to the theory of Freud, since the boy spends most of his time in staying together with his mother after he was born, therefore he relies on his mother in each aspect of his life. To some extent, mother is his first lover.

British industrialization has become a history, but its effects were enormous and memorable. In the 1830s, the British industrialization began. All kinds of industries had sprung up and developed quickly. It was the result of the original capital accumulation. However, apart from the high-speed development of economies, British industrialization also had a bad influence on people’s lives at that time. It caused the pollution of environment, destroyed the harmony of families and even damaged people’s physical and mental health.

三、采用的主要研究方法

1.文献研究法：搜集整理相关研究资料，为研究做准备；

2.比较分析法：比较文中的不同爱情及其爱情破灭的原因，从中找出异同点及根源，最终得出保罗爱情悲剧的原因。 3.close-reading

四、论题的主要观点、价值及不足之处

This dissertation first mainly describes the understanding and analysis of the Oedipus complex, then combines the social background at that time, the fighting and quarrels, dependentments and distorted love between the son and the mother to disclose the contradictory mind and the tragedy of Paul.

Due to my professional level limited, this dissertation’s analyze to the Industrial Revolution are not enough.
