Abstract

Untranslatability plays a very important role in English translation，especially in Chinese classical poetry. Thus，translators should try their best to acknowledge the specific definition and search out some effective solutions. This thesis explains the definition and classifications of untranslatability and analysis the causes，discuss the strategies in order to cope with the untranslatability phenomenon though the specific example——Libai’ s poetic works. It shows that untranslatability is an objective phenomenon does exist in most Chinese poetry due to the differences in linguistic level and cultural level between the source language and target language. But there are indeed some strategies to solve it and gradually convert it to translatability. Both translating learners and professional translators should pay enough attention to this field and come up with some effective and feasible solutions so that Chinese classical poetic works can be spread to the west with original meaning.

摘 要

不可译性在英语翻译中起着至关重要的作用，尤其是在中国古典诗歌的翻译过程中。因此译者必须尽其所能掌握不可译性的具体定义，并探究出有效的解决策略。本文以李白诗歌为典例，阐述了不可译性的定义及其原因，并介绍了一些应对此现象的基本翻译方法。根据笔者的探究，最终说明不可译现象在大多数中国古典诗歌中是客观存在的，原因便在于目标语言与源语言之间由语言层面及文化层面导致的种种差异。因此呼吁笔译学习者及专业译者能对诗歌的不可译领域给予更多的关注，将中国古典诗歌的意蕴尽可能完备地传达至外国读者。 关键词：不可译性，解决策略，语言层面，文化层面
