Ladies and gentlemen, good morning. My name is Lan An . I’m from class 12. The title of my thesis is On Cultural factors in English idioms and the translation. This thesis is completed under the instruction of Ms. He Rong. I’m extremely grateful to her for her constant direction and suggestion for revising the draft of my paper. I also have to thank the professors sitting here today for your generosity in spending your time here.
The title of my paper is On Cultural factors in English idioms and the translation. I choose this as my topic due to the following reasons. With the developing globalization, communication demand precise language. Idioms are not a separate part of the language that we cannot omit. Idioms are unique and fixed expressions which are used in linguistic communication. They are the essence of language, and also the quintessence of a nation’s culture and wisdom. Therefore, the translation of English idioms should be faithful to their cultural information. As the product of English culture that the nation has accumulated through thousands of years, English idioms are heavily-loaded with cultural information. Studying the cultural factors in English idioms would be helpful to cross-cultural understanding and it’s also a good advance to our future if we can learn it well. For the above facts, I select the subject as the title of my paper.
This paper consists of five parts. Part one presents general introduction to the basic concept and the studying purpose. Part two presents overview of the English idioms, it concludes the origins and characteristics. Part three emphasize cultural factors in English idioms. Through contrast analysis of well-known Chinese and English language, found the differences cultural discrepancy. Part four tackles on how to translate English idioms well and put forward four methods to translate English idioms. Part five draws some conclusions that characteristics and translate methods of English idioms. It is not easy to translate idiom exactly and translation methods are different in specific idioms. Cultural factors and characteristics of idioms should be considered during the process of translation. It is necessary for a better understanding of international promotional communication. A translator must be well acquainted with the source language (English) and the target language (Chinese) so that he can convey meanings from one language to another effectively
