The Course Paper from Sino-American Culture Contrast Sino-American Culture & Manners
In this paper I will talk about manners of Chinese and Americans,to find some differences between the two countries. Different manners show the culture influence,so we can learn something about the culture.It's hard to say which culture is better, we can only see that in different situation, there are positive or negative manners.I will introduce in three fields.
Business manners
In America, business gifts are given at the end of a business deal. Gifts are usually unwrapped upon receiving them. Gifts are often given during the holiday seasons from late November to early January. When visiting a home it's not necessary to bring a gift. If you would like to bring one, flowers or a box of chocolates is a fine choice. Gift giving is a very delicate issue in China, It is illegal to give gifts to government official ,however, it has become more commonplace in the business world.It is more acceptable to give gifts either in private or to a group as a whole to avoid embarrassment.
In America money is the bottom line and social pleasantries such as preventing someone from "losing face" is not practiced here. Hard-hitting, hard-selling tactics are often used, including arguing, pointing out faults in your plan, or simply saying "no" to your proposals. The direct approach is often seen as the best route to take in business. When a decision is reached, though, consider it unbreakable. But Chinese seldom point out the fault in your plan directly,for it may make you lose your face, they will tell you euphemize or on a private talk. Chinese look down on those who overemphasize money ,so some time even money is very important you can't care very much. These things all owe to "face","face" is so important to Chinese.
Many business meetings are held over lunch, a light meal usually served without alcoholic drinks in America. Sometimes drinks accompany lunch, depending upon the business rules for that particular company. Supper, or dinner, is the main meal of the day, usually between 6 and 8 p.m. Seldom is business conducted on Sundays. Chinese like talking about important things on table,alcoholic drink will not absent. Drinking is even regarded as a important skill on business. Table manners
Americans use the knife and fork, some foods are eaten with the hands, such as appetizers, breads, cupcakes, fruits and some vegetables. Do not smack your lips or slurp soup while eating. Don't reach on to another's plate to sample a food nor should you ever take a sample of your own food and put on someone else's plate. When finished eating simply lay utensils down in no particular order or pattern.A round dining table is more popular in China than a rectangular or square one. As many people who can be seated comfortably around it conveniently face one another.The host should actively take
care of all his guests, inviting them to enjoy their meal.Apart from soup, all dishes should be eaten with chopsticks.A toast to others is a characteristic Chinese dinning. When all people are seated and all cups are filled, the host should toast others first, together with some simple prologue to let the dinning start. During the dining after the senior's toast, you can toast anyone from superior to inferior at their convenience. When someone toasts you, you should immediately stop eating and drinking to accept and toast in response.
Social life manners
Be on time for appointments is important in American. It's acceptable to be a few minutes late for a social affair, though. Chinese think the appointment data is just a period of time,late or early for some time is acceptable.
Dress well yet conservatively for your first meeting. Dress tends to vary widely depending upon the type of business you're doing and how large the corporation. Pantsuits are generally acceptable business wear for women, tailored suits for men. Leisure hours afford casual dress such as jeans, tee shirts, ball caps. Chinese is almost the same with Americans, but in some area of China ,people must dressed in white on funeral,any other color is allowed.
When invited to an American's home don't be surprised if the women, and even the children, are a part of the group affair. In China only the men sit and eat together but in the U.S. all people in the house are usually included. It's acceptable to refuse any particular food or drink without offending someone. Chinese never do that ,you'd better praise the dish .If you smoke, ask if it's acceptable to do so, since in many homes and restaurants, smoking simply isn't allowed.
Although showing respect to the elderly is a common courtesy every where in the world, the emphasis is not put on the USA ,as harshly as it is in other countries It's acceptable to speak to any member of a group first, without looking around to see who is the eldest. Respect for elders is the traditional virtues of Chinese nation,you'd better not offend the elders.
In some cultures compliments are seen as suspicious but in America compliments are dished out freely. Joking around is often done in meetings as well as one's personal life. Avoid jokes of ethnic or religious humor. Sports are very popular in America and are a good way to start a conversation. Avoid conversations concerning religion, politics or controversial subjects until you know the person well. Chinese pay less attention to ethnic or religious,but some time privacy is acceptable to talk about except something very personal.
