I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Margaret Elizabeth Gormley, I go by Maggie. I am an American, born in California. I’ve lived and travelled in many places in the United States, Europe, Western and Southeastern Asia. I am a certified English as a Second Language Teacher, and have taught in Thailand, the United States, and now here in China. I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, with Honors, from Wayne State College, in Nebraska USA in 1995. I spent the first half of my career leading large group trainings and counseling groups, providing state mandated classes to domestic violence perpetrators and subsequently to caregivers. I have taught groups of adults about power dynamics in

Once I decided to pursue ESL teaching, I spent an additional year preparing. I took Grammar and teaching classes through a local college, studied how to use my group facilitation skills in an English classroom setting, and I completed my TEFL certification.

I have taught English as a Second Language for a total of 6 years now. In that time, I have developed totally new curriculum for 3 schools, developed an entire new program at 1 school, designed the materials and curriculum for 2 comprehensive summer programs, led English corners and English clubs, trained people for English language work presentations and job interviews, as well as the speaking portion of the TOEFL exam. I have taught all class sizes and levels. I have been recognized as the outstanding teacher of the year, promoted from entry level positions to management positions, hand picked from a group of employees to be the person responsible for training other employees. I have formally mentored other teachers how to teach, and continue to educate myself on the best ways to share information.

A reverence for honored teachers that goes back through generations, a rich history of learning, an ancient Buddhist tradition, and an impressive record of improvement in the average person’s life over the past decade, all contributed to my decision to come to China. I chose Hainan, mostly because of the amazing climate and access to nature, but also because of the rapid internationalization of the province. I spent last year teaching at an International program in a high school where I started a new bi-lingual program, successfully coordinated a 200 attendee Christmas program, and achieved the honor of best foreign teacher for 2019-2020. Even with all that, I knew I wanted something different, more. If I was going to stay here, I wanted to have a direct, positive impact on the development of this beautiful

province. I learned that Hainan had been designated a Free Trade Port with special economic status, and that in order to make that a reality, English would become an essential skill for most people, especially for government workers. Then, I got a message from a young man I had cycled with, inquiring if I might be looking for work.

I met Yong (the team leader) and was impressed with Wang’s centeredness and kindness, as well as the groundwork that Yong had already done on this program. I instantly decided I wanted to be a part of this team, and a part of this work. All-Elite, funded by FullMarks, is innovative. All-Elite combines the knowledge of local people with the knowledge of

westerners, focuses on the educational tools from both traditions, and is intent on bettering the province in-line with the goals of the central government.
