Analyses a Christmas Carol from the Angle of Western Culture

Charles Dickens, the greatest representative of English critical realism, generally considered the greatest novelist of the Victorian period. A Christmas Carol is one of Dickens’s Christmas novels. The author makes the novel dramatic with the help of religious culture and real life. At the same time, this novel plays a role in promoting the development of Christmas culture, and some of the plot in the story became modern Christmas customs, such as family reunion, exchange gifts, Christmas food and beverage, etc. This novel inspires people to reconsider the meaning of life. This novel tells a story: The story is about Ebenezer Scrooge, a lonely old man who has given up on everything in the world except his money and his selfish. Ebenezer Scrooge is a businessman who is so stingy and odd that he even doesn’t want to give one more coal to his poor clerk to make a fire, and even on Christmas Eve, he refuses his nephew’s invitation. That night, Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley who had died seven years prior on Christmas Eve and is now forced to spend his afterlife carrying heavy chains that were forged from his own greedy ways. Marley warns Scrooge that he will suffer an even worse fate if he does not repent and foretells that he will be haunted by three ghosts that will help guide him. Three Christmas spirits make him realize the joy of giving and the consequences of callous and selfish. At the same time, three spirits help him dig his human nature on the other side of the compassion, kindness and mercy. 2. Western Culture 2.1 Christmas culture

The joy of Christmas atmosphere, poor children sing Christmas songs, some charity donation activities described in the novel are all Christmas culture. The value of it is not the festival itself, but the information transferred and expressed by holiday——Christmas spirit. Like the Scrooge’s nephew said “It is a happy moment with friends and family together to meet the nice time joy, it is also our moment to help the poor.” Christmas spirit means harmony, joy, kindness and blessings. It means that giving without receiving, bringing blessings to people without complaining, communicating with others, expressing love and gratitude to your family and friends without hesitation. We can use the Christmas spirit to reduce people's hostility, to forgive, to ease and smooth the contradiction of different classes. This novel conveys this kind of spirit, and owning this spirit can make people respect and tolerate each other. That is, the poor should not lose their personality and dignity; the rich should also be generous and caring. 3. Conclusion

Besides its artistic value, this novel also brings a lot of enlightenment to our life. No matter how prejudiced, ignorance, confused we are in the past, as long as we have the courage to choose our today's life, and willing to change yourself, like the protagonist of this novel, we will have the right to obtain happiness.
