Song of the Parting Son

慈 母 手 中 线，

From the threads a mother's hand weaves,

游 子 身 上 衣。 A gown for parting son is made.

临 行 密 密 缝，

Sown stitch by stitch before he leaves,

意 恐 迟 迟 归。 For fear his return be delayed.

谁 言 寸 草 心，

Such kindness as young grass receives

报 得 三 春 晖。

From the warm sun can't be repaid.

【诗人简介】 孟郊（751-814）


字东野，湖州武康（今浙江德清）人。元贞十二年（796）进士。长于无言古诗，诗风瘦硬奇警，以苦吟著称。有《孟东野诗集》。

Meng Jiao

A native of Huzhou Wukang (present-day Deqing County, Zhejiang Province), Meng Jiao (751-814) was also known as Dongye (courtesy name). He passed the palace examination in 796, the 12th year of the Zhenyuan period in the Tang Dynasty. He excelled in writing ancient-style five-character poems in a tough and peculiar style, thus being hailed as a painful-chanter poet. His works are complied into the Collection of

Meng Dongye’s Poems.
