1. Ladies and gentlemen, Permit me first of all to thank you, our host, for your

extraordinary arrangements and hospitality. My wife and I, as well as our entire party, are deeply grateful.

2. Respected Your Excellency, My Chinese friends, Thank you very much for

your gracious words of welcome. This is a happy and memorable occasion for me personally as well as for all the members of my delegation.

3. To come to China, one of the early cradles of civilization, has long been my

dream and therefore, I feel very honored to be your guest.

4. Thank you for inviting me to your discussions. It is my privilege - and

responsibility - to convey the Secretary General's concern on HIV/AIDS. 5. In accepting Your Excellency’s gracious invitation to visit this great country, I

have had an excellent opportunity to renew old friendships and establish new contacts.

6. I am very happy to be here, to be able to greet so many old friends and to have

the opportunity to make some new ones.

7. I am deeply honored to be able to join you today on behalf of UNAIDS - the

Joint United Nations Programme on AIDS . I can truly say that never before, in any nation of the world, has there been such a large and committed gathering of leaders from every level dedicated to the common cause of fighting AIDS.

8. May I begin by congratulating you, Dr Petersen, on assuming the chair of this

meeting and say how much I look forward to working with you in the coming year in these important functions.

9. Mr. President, On behalf of all the collogues present here, I wish to thank you

for the incomparable hospitality, for which the Chinese people are justly famous through out the world.

10. My distinguished guests, On this most beautiful moon-lit evening, on behalf

of General Manager Ms. Mei and all my colleagues of the company, I wish to thank you all for taking your time off your busy schedule, at the busiest time of the year, to come to our Chinese New Year’s Party. We really appreciate your presence here tonight with us. In particular, we are very fortunate tonight


to have the attendance of our friend Prof. Johnson who came here all the way from America.

11. Mr. Chairman, Ladies and gentlemen, Merry Christmas to you all! On behalf

of all the members of my group, I’d like to thank you, Mr. Chairman, for your gracious invitation for us to attend such an enjoyable Christmas party in such a magnificently decorated hall.

12. Permit me, on behalf of the organizing committee, to extend a warm welcome

to our guests of various circles, from home and abroad.

13. I’m very happy to have the opportunity to talk to you about major traditional

Chinese holidays.

14. I’d like to thank you for your presence at the party, and wish everyone good

health and the very best of luck in everything in the New Year.

15. I hope this party will give us an opportunity to get to know each other better

in a less formal way and to increase personal friendships.

16. The party was perfectly organized and I enjoyed every minute of it. And I am

very grateful for this nice arrangement.

17. I would like to toast with you to this happy occasion at the close of the year. 18. I wish to express our sincere thanks to the people of the local education

community, whose generous help has made possible the successful commencement of this conference.

19. Let us seek common ground while putting aside differences, enhance mutual

understanding and trust, and strengthen exchange and cooperation. 20. Thank you for your support; Thank you for your attention.

21. I believe that if all of us unite and act together, and only if we unite and act

together - and empower UNAIDS - we can have an effective response and make a difference.

22. Well, it really was a great honor to speak to you, and I hope this gathering will

keep harmony till the end. Thank you!

23. Ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for giving me an opportunity to speak about

myself at this special occasion.
