endeavor这个词，有些小伙伴也许不陌生，因为高中英语有学过，我记得课文提到这个词的时候是说大航海时代伟大的库克船长的船叫endeavour（奋进号）。

高中词汇表里给的解释是「努力」。

由于在课文中它是一个孤立存在的词，一直以来都只记得意思不知道用法。

但在工作中，频频遇到这个词，特别是在有同事离职的时，邮件里往往会出现endeavor。

显然在这些语境里，理解为「努力」是说不通的，更加像是是「事业」「计划」，但目前没有哪本字典有这个释义，所以我们只能意会了。

高中课本里把endeavour翻译成「奋进号」是非常有水平的，表示砥砺前行，取得进步，而直接翻译成「努力」，就如同「越努力越幸运」「明天的你一定会感谢现在拼命的自己」这种鸡汤格言般俗不可耐。

我们姑且把other endeavor,new endeavor,future endeavor理解为在奋进旅途中的某一站。

有一个常用的搭配叫scientific endeavor，一般翻译为「科学事业」「科学项目」。
