【中文摘要】美国西部小说是美国最具本土特色的文学现象,因一直处于通俗小说的地位,始终未引起国内外学者足够的重视。但目前多元文化趋势的兴起为美国西部小说的研究提供了良好的环境。美国西部小说是在边疆开拓和西进运动过程中形成的,研究它是了解美国本土文化和历史发展的最佳途径。美国个人主义是美国的文化核心和主流价值观,在美国社会、大众心理甚至经济和政治等领域都起着主导作用。本文作者发现美国个人主义和美国西部小说之间存在着重要关系。本文用英雄一词把二者联系起来,即美国西部小说中英雄形象是在美国个人主义价值观的影响下塑造出的。本文选择美国西部小说史上最有代表性的三部作品:詹姆斯·费尼莫尔·库珀创作的《最后的莫西干人》(1826年)、欧文·威斯特的《弗吉尼亚人》(1902年)以及拉里·麦克默特里的《孤独鸽》(1985年),从美国个人主义的角度去分析其中英雄形象的塑造。本文的意义在于:通过采用通俗文化和主流文化价值观相结合的研究,引起学者对西部小说的重视,提高美国西部小说的地位并更深刻地了解它。同时可以进一步了解美国的核心文化和西进运动的历史及其对美国的影响。本文包括五个章节:第一章是导言,介绍了本论文的研...
