Many people don't know how to start a conversation when the first time they had met a foreigner. In general, we always asked some questions. This is a good way begin to talk. Follow these tips can make a small talk. Sometimes it is very difficult for those don't know it. I list here some typical examples to make good small talk. They might seem basic to some of you but this is how a typical conversation between unfamiliar people actually sounds. You can use them more or less in this order.
Keep up with current events. Make small talk about the news, sports, your community, or politics (unless politics is too controversial. On second thought, that can generate some pretty intense dialogues! Comment on an article of clothing or accessories. Ask where it came from, what the significance is, how much it cost (just kidding). Making small talk is about being observant about people you don't know well.
Pay attention to what they're saying. When you're making small talk, follow up on phrases; for instance, if they say they're "excellent ", ask why - ask where you can get some. If they mention that they're exhausted, follow up on it. When you're making small talk, remember these great conversations and good connections can be just around the corner.
Share an anecdote about your day. Did you lose your keys or find $10? Maybe you ate at a new restaurant recently, or found a great new CD. Making small talk is about sharing the little things.
Ask what movies or books they've seen or read recently. Someone once asked me that at a party. Admittedly, at first it felt contrived, but then we had a wonderful conversation about the book I was reading! Making small talk is about trying new conversations.
Talk about television. Share your favourite TV-shows, such as Oprah's revelation or The Secret or your favorite scene play. If you're Canadian, Little Mosque on the Prairie might
be interesting to discuss! Making a small talk about pop culture is easily and fun.
That should be plenty of casual conversation. American businessmen especially like to get down to business without too much small talk. After your meeting, you could go to a bar or pub to get to know each other better. Your foreign friend will be more relaxed and more talkative in that situation.
IV. Taboo in the chat
1. In China we also ask our friends many privates questions, it shows us care about our friends. I list those questions. 1. How old are you? 2. Where are you going? 3. How much do you earn? 4. Where are you working now? 4. Are you married? 5. Are you have any religion? These are very common questions we also ask our friends when we talk with them. But for western who don't like talk about their privates, they hate Chinese ask these questions.
2. Different person maybe believe different religion. In wester countries many persons believe religion. It means they can not say some words or change some words pronunciation. Such as in English, none says the pronunciation "God " direct, they change the pronunciation and say "Gosh ". Most of Asian believe Muslim or Buddhism, but in western they believe Christian or other religion. Every religion has taboo words.
3. In China when we meet our friends we also said " Are you eat " or " Where are you going ". But in wester countries they said " How are you? " or " How do you do? ".
4. If we stare at someone is impolite when we talk with others, but western like it. They call it "eye connect ", it shows respect for the speaker and interest in the speaker's topic.
