Tutorial schools: An effective way to prepare for public exams in Hong Kong?
Many students go to tutorial schools after schools. These extra classes, which take place in the evening or at weekends, help students to prepare for public exams. But are they effective?
Tutorial schools are hugely popular in Hong Kong, and it’s easy to see why. Students are given extra help in subjects they may find particularly difficult. The tutors at these schools have the time to answer students’ questions and offer further explanations, something teachers at regular schools do not always have the time to do.
Students also learn not just about what to learn for the exam, but how to approach the exam, with lessons in exam techniques—a very important skill. Tutorial schools often hold mock exams for students so that they can practice the exam several times before they actually take it. Some tutorial schools also offer tailored tuition: a student’s weaknesses are identified, and he/she is then provided with additional materials and homework to overcome these weaknesses. All of these teaching methods combined means that students are well prepared for the exam and their confidence is very high.
However, tutorial schools are not without their critics. Hong Kong’s students are already under a lot of pressure and spend many hours in the classroom, and attending extra classes after school only adds to this pressure. Studying until late at night or at weekends leaves students feeling tired, which can affect their health and ability to concentrate.
Furthermore, tutorial schools tell students what to learn ad how to learn it: there is no room for independent thinking. This can be a problem later on when students start university or get a job and are unable to think for themselves. And let us not forget that education is about more than just passing exams: it is also about being kind, having a passion, knowing how to work in a team. Leisure activities like volunteering, music and sport also teach us these life skills. If students have no leisure time, they are likely to be less well-rounded individuals.
In my opinion, it would be better if we did not have tutorial schools in Hong Kong. They create an uneven playing field, as only those whose parents can afford to pay the high fees can attend them, However, it is unlikely students will stop going to them at the time the pressure to succeed is so strong in Hong Kong.
