Abstract

As I Lay Dying, one of William Faulkner’s representative works, enjoys a great reputation both at home and abroad. Since its publication in 1930, this work has evoked heated argument among the critics. The award of Nobel Prize of this novel adds fuel to the flames. Deeply influenced by Faulkner’s living background and life experiences, this work reflects Faulkner’s life philosophy—existentialism in a certain way. The existentialists advocate the ideas that existence proceeds being and the absurdity of being. Novels steeped in existentialism, often expose the absurdity of the world and the suffering of human life, and thus emphasize the principle of free choice. In As I Lay Dying, by virtue of describing the pilgrimage-like journey of Bundren family and portraying the main characters like Addie and Carl, Faulkner reveals that everyone is isolated, living in an absurd world with no purpose of existing, and only by means of free choice can one identifies himself.

摘 要



威廉•福克纳的代表作《我弥留之际》在国内外享有声誉。自1930年出版以来，这部作品就广受批评家的热评。诺贝尔奖的获得更是为其推波助澜。深受福克纳生存环境和生活经验的影响，这部作品在一定程度上反映了福克纳的生活哲学——存在主义。存在主义认为存在先于本质，荒谬是人类的本体性状态。具有存在主义色彩的小说，往往揭示世界的荒谬和人生的痛苦，并强调人的自由选择。在《我弥留之际》中，福克纳通过描述本德伦一家天路般的“长途旅行”，以及对艾迪和达尔等主要人物的刻画，揭示人都是孤独的，存在于没有目的的荒谬世界中，只能通过自由选择进行自我定义。 关键词：《我弥留之际》；存在主义；荒谬；自由选择
