My opinions about Intercultural Communication
Intercultural communication or communication between people of different
cultural backgrounds has always been and will probably remain an important precondition of our existance on earth. If we use what is said above about “culture” and “communication” as a base, we would now be able to define intercultural communication as the sharing of information on different levels of awareness and control between people with different cultural backgrounds.Different cultural backgrounds include both national cultural differences and differences which are connected with participation in the different activities.
First of all,we should know the differences between Chinese and Westerners ways of thinking. As for the westerners, they prefer to talk about things in a more directly way, however, our Chinese, would like to talk about things in a subtle way.In China,we’d like to express our views in a roundabout way,we consider it to be of politeness. It also reflects the differences of the values in China and Western.Chinese people pay more attention to the collectivism, while the Westerners focus on the individualistic. In China, name are not essential as long as we know who we are. However Western culture’s embrace of individualism stems from its embrace of reason because they think everybody is unique, and has its own value.
"Westerners and Asians literally see different worlds," says Prof. Nisbett. "Westerners pay attention to the focal object, while Asians attend more broadly -- to
the overall surroundings and to the relations between the object and the field." I think it perfectly explains the differences.
And we should also know the differences between Chinese and western life.It includes such as the body language, the etiquette in the daily
communications. What we should do and want we cannot do among Intercultural communication is pretty impotent. When we speak, our speech is continuously accompanied by gestures, facial expressions and other body movements that add to what we are saying in different ways. There are great differences in how people from different cultures communicate with their bodies,we should not make mistakes while talking with Westerners,so it’s of great importance to hold the knowledges about Western etiquette.
We may quote a example of Smile.Smile usually convey friendliness, approval, satisfaction, pleasure, joy and merriment. This is generally true in Asia as well as the English-speaking countries. Smiles are important social cues that may tell us whether or not someone is friendly.Westerners think people smile when they are happy. So it may confuse them that our Chinese people always smile during the international trade conference,it seems that both sides have made an agreement. But the fact is that Chinese smile just in order to express their friendliness.
When cross-cultural exchange, we should also respect the religious beliefs of others. In a Christian [world, many countries in the West have experienced declines in religious observance and increases in secularization in the twentieth century. The United States, however, seems to be an exception. the U. S. still remains the most religious country in the Western countries. In comparison with European countries, America not only has a greater number of religious believers, but also enjoys a much higher church survey, The Economist reported that about 95 percent of Americans believed in God; four out of five believed in miracles , life after death and the Virgin Mary birth; 6.5 percent believed in the devil 75 percent believed in angels; and nine out of ten owned a bible.
While it is true that the United States in the most religious nation in the world, it is also true that much of religion in American has become a matter of private ethical convictions. Indeed, it is variously noted that American are active in secular affairs, that religious observations have been losing their supernatural or otherworldly character, that religion in America tends to be religion at a very low temperature, and that younger generations, as a rule, have less and less training in, or attachment to,
religious doctrine. But on the other hand, militant anticlericalism, as noted previously, is lacking in the United States, and church membership, on the whole, is quite large. Lack of understanding is a failure to interpret parts of or all of what the other person is saying or doing. The lack of understanding may be conscious or unconscious, that is,we may or may not notice that we have not understood. The lack can, if it is a conscious, lead to an attempt to do something about it, such as to say that we have not understood or to ask for an explanation. The lack of understanding can also be allowed to pass, in spite of the fact that you are aware of it, perhaps because, owing to a lack of time or to an inferior status, we do not consider ourselves in a position to ask for help or to admit that we have not understood.
Our ability to interact with persons from different cultures both from within and outside our borders has immense economic benefits.Whenever we interact with a person from a different culture we carry with us assumptions and impressions of that other person. Only through intercultural communication can we ever get to know the person as an individual.
